SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) - (01/03/18) - A cold weather item has turned into a hot item for thieves.
ABC12 has learned of at least two snowblower thefts in Zilwaukee, three in Carrollton Township, and one in Saginaw Township, just since Christmas. Two of the thefts were reported today.
Some of the stolen snowblowers were left outside, others were in unlocked garages.
"It's a crime of opportunity where the thief sees the snowblower that someone has been using, take a break to go inside, warm up for a minute, the snowblowers out in the driveway, on the sidewalk. The thief driving by sees it, it's just a quick stop and you can put it in the back of a vehicle and away they go," said Saginaw Township Police Chief Don Pussehl.
Pussehl said don't make yourself an easy target.
If you're taking a break from snowblowing, put the machine back in the garage.
When it's in the garage, shut the garage door, even if you'll just be inside for a few minutes.
And when you're done, lock the garage.
The police departments we spoke with about the thefts said they don't see this kind of item stolen often as there's a lot of risk involved. Snowblowers are hard to conceal for thieves trying to make a quick getaway.
"It may catch the attention of a neighbor if they see someone walking down the street with a snowblower, or they're coming out of a garage with a snowblower," Pussehl said.
Another thing police said you should do is to write down the serial number from your snowblower or any other valuable. That way if it is stolen, they have some way to track it.
