CHESANING (WJRT) (11/07/2017) - The neighbor of a couple who won a $5 million prize from Mega Millions last month says the money is going to a good home.
Gladys Salzwedel of Oakley came forward on Tuesday to claim her prize after matching all five white balls in the Oct. 27 drawing.
"We are all happy she was from around here, more or less," said Faye Fondren, manager of the Admiral gas station in Chesaning, which sold the winning ticket. "Good for her."
Salzwedel was watching a story on ABC12 last week about the unclaimed jackpot and remembered she hadn't checked the ticket she bought on Oct. 27 from the Chesaning Admiral.
Her husband got the ticket out of her purse and realized she was the big winner.
Matching the five white balls in Mega Millions is usually a $1 million prize, but Salzwedel also bought the megaplier, which put her jackpot at $5 million. After taxes, it's a lump sum payment of about $3.5 million.
Stan Nowostko lives across the street from the Salzwedels. He had heard he could be living near Mid-Michigan's newest millionaire.
Nowostko didn't buy a ticket, but he's glad his neighbors across the road did.
"I think its great," he said of the Salzwedels winning the prize. "Like I said, it's nice to see somebody who could use it and everything."
Fondren didn't immediately recogize Salzwedel's name when she learned it was her who won the prize. But she certainly remembered Salzwedel's face.
"I'll be darned," Fondren said. "She comes in here all the time. Every morning, she is in every morning, I haven't seen her lately though."
A spokesperson for the Michigan Lottery said the Admiral store will soon get $5,000 for selling that winning ticket.
