SHIAWASSEE COUNTY (WJRT) (10/20/2017) - Six Belgian draft horses were rescued in Shiawassee County after reports they were not being cared for adequately and slightly malnourished.
The Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook that the owner and his family agreed to surrender the animals to an animal control deputy. The deputy then contacted Howell-based Coast to Coast Draft Horse Connection, a nonprofit rescue organization.
The group came out to the property with trucks and trailers on Oct. 14 and took custody of the animals.
The department thanked volunteers for sedating the untrained animals and helping load them into trailers in the pouring rain.
Coast to Coast posted on Facebook that the horses range in age from 3 or 4 to older than 30. All six have been seen by a veterinarian and spent hours getting their hoofs trimmed by a farrier.
All six horses scored below average on a body composition exam. The group says costs to care for the animals has exceeded $2,000.
