LAPEER (WJRT) (9/12/2017) - A 65-year-old Lapeer man died late Monday from injuries sustained in an auto repair accident on Sunday evening.
Around 5:55 p.m., Dennis Peters was helping a friend with repairs to a 2009 GMC Acadia inside the garage of his home in the 100 block of Angle Road, according to the Lapeer County Sheriff's Department.
Peters and his 30-year-old friend from Fostoria had the front of the Acadia jacked up with a wedge placed behind a rear tire. When the repairs were completed, they lowered the GMC and the 30-year-old tried to move the SUV forward so they could get the wedge out.
However, police say there was air in the brake line, so when the 30-year-old moved the Acadia forward the brakes would not engage. The GMC pinned Peters, who was standing in front, between the SUV and a workbench.
The 30-year-old was able to back up the Acadia to free Peters and then 911 to summon emergency crews. Lapeer County EMS transported Peters to McClaren Lapeer Region Community Medical Center, where he died late Monday, the sheriff's department said.
Police and the Lapeer County Medical Examiner's Office were still investigating the incident on Tuesday, but called it an "unfortunate, tragic event."
