MUNDY TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (05/30/17) - A major hotel chain is returning to Mid-Michigan. It will join several other hotels already located in Genesee County's Mundy Township at Hill Road and US-23. In about five or six months, a new Hyatt will be open.
The Hyatt will be located on a three-and-a-half acre site that was formerly occupied by Hill Street Homes. Construction should start in a few weeks.
"They're going to hit the road running and hope to be open by this fall," said Tonya Ketzler, Charter Township of Mundy clerk.
The hotel will be four stories tall and have 106 rooms. There will be an indoor pool, convention space and a restaurant and bistro. The Hyatt will join at least five other hotels and motels in the US-23 and Hill Road area.
"We'll have with this 800 rooms on Hill Road," Ketzler said.
With Miracle League baseball fields being developed nearby, thousands of visitors are expected in the area in 2018.
"We can have people come and stay and then use our handicap ball fields," Ketzler said.
The Convention and Visitors Bureau of the Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce is happy to see that Hyatt wants to put down roots here.
"Adding more rooms into our region will ensure that people are staying right here in Genesee County and visiting all our businesses in the region," said DeAndra McCain, CVB director, Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce.
During times of peak tourism like Back to the Bricks and the Crim Festival of Races, the new Hyatt will ensure there will be first class accommodations available.
"The more visitors we have here in Flint and Genesee County, the more jobs are created in the hospitality industry and more businesses start to sprout up," McCain said.
Mundy Township officials are also in talks with another hotel and a couple of well-known restaurants.
