Owosso (WJRT) (9/26/17) - Manufacturing in Shiawassee County has grown substantially in the past few years. A number of manufacturers have been in contact with the Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership and Ashlor Staffing Services and told them about the need for more workers. So the two organizations will be holding a job fair to find qualified candidates.
"We staff for all different things, mostly manufacturing but also we do get some administrative positions, sometimes medical," said Marrah Servan of Ashlor Staffing Services.
And in recent months there has been a lack of workers at a number of Shiawassee County factories.
"Really, if you have any type of industrial manufacturing skills and you're looking for a new opportunity you should come by on Saturday and learn about what jobs are available," said Justin Horvath of the Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership.
The lack of workers can be blamed in part on the low unemployment rate in Shiawassee County, which stands at about 4%. It's hoped that job seekers from Flint and Saginaw will be willing to make the trip to Owosso and talk with employers.
"They'll have a chance to get job information, interview on the spot so people should bring resumes and be prepared to talk to folks about getting hired," said Horvath.
Employers are looking for general manufacturing workers, fork lift drivers, warehouse personnel, industrial sewers and sand blasters. The job fair is an indication the area economy is back on track.
"To see it come back here in the area, in Shiawassee County is very exciting," said Horvath.
When people are hired, benefits will be offered after 90 days and includes health insurance, life insurance and paid holidays.
"Manufacturing is definitely making an incredible rebound. Michigan is actually the number one state in the country for manufacturing job growth right now," said Horvath.
The job fair is this Saturday, September 30, at the D'Mar Banquet and Conference Center, which is located at 1488 North M-52 in Owosso. It runs from 9am to 1pm.
