Arrest made in death of 79-year-old Holocaust survivor Leonid Yufa

FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (12/22/2017) - A 32-year-old man has been arrested for murder in connection with the death of 79-year-old Leonid Yufa.

The body of the Holocaust survivor and chess master was found around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday in his apartment in the 4400 block of Lennington Court.

Officers from the Flint Township Police Department found obvious signs of foul play in the apartment and launched a homicide investigation. Investigators believe Yufa died from asphyxiation, but the manner of death hasn't been released.

On Thursday, Flint Township police detectives arrested 32-year-old Dmitri Zavalnitski of Flint Township in connection with the case. He was officially charged Friday with felony murder, first-degree home invasion, second-degree home invasion, possession of burglary tools and possession of marijuana.

Zavalnitski was arraigned Friday in 67th District Court and remained in custody at the Genesee County Jail.
