Fenton standoff ends with man's apparent suicide

FENTON (WJRT) (6/12/2018) - A standoff that started with a domestic fight and concerns about a barricaded gunman in Fenton ended when police found the man dead of a likely suicide.

The man's girlfriend drove to the Fenton Police Department to make a report after the two of them had a fight. Officers went to the residence in the 6000 block of Hickory Street near Adelaide Street to arrest him.

However, Fenton Police Chief Jason Slater said officers heard a gunshot as they approached the house. Concerned for their safety, the officers backed away and called in a tactical team for assistance.

The Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team responded and police kept a heavy presence outside the house while trying to establish contact with the man.

Around noon, police broke a window to send a robot inside the house. That's when they found the man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No other injuries were reported.

The man's name was not released. Slater said Fenton police have responded to the same residence multiple times in the past.

Neighbors say the area generally is pretty quiet and they've never seen an incident like this before.
