Bay City allows medical marihuana facilities after overriding mayoral veto

BAY CITY (WJRT) (1/2/2018) - Medical marihuana facilities will be allowed in Bay City after all following a City Commission vote Tuesday to override a mayoral veto.

The Bay City Commission had voted 7-1 on Dec. 18 to approve an ordinance that would pave the way for dispensaries, growers, and processing centers among other medical marihuana operations.

However, Bay City Mayor Kathleen Newsham vetoed the ordinance. She believes commissioners acted hastily by revising the ordinance and increasing the number of dispensaries allowed in the city.

On Tuesday, commissioners voted 8-1 to override her veto and enact the ordinance as it was approved on Dec. 18. The commission needed six votes in favor of the ordinance, a two-thirds majority, to sustain the override.
