Bed-ridden woman found dead after Saginaw Township house fire

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (12/28/2017) - The body of a bed-ridden woman who lived alone was found inside her house late Wednesday after a fire.

The Saginaw Township Fire Department found the 58-year-old woman, who has not been identified, lying in a hospital bed in the 4200 block of West Michigan Avenue. They were called to the home around 9:40 p.m. after neighbors reported the fire.

The first fire crews on the scene found heavy smoke and flames pouring out of some windows. Firefighters entered the residence from the rear and attacked the blaze from inside.

Most of the flames were knocked down quickly, but firefighters had trouble putting out hot spots due to the amount of debris stored in the home.

Saginaw Township Fire Chief Jim Peterson said the woman had portable oxygen canisters near her. Authorities were investigating the woman's living situation.

"We're checking out some possibilities of who was taking care of her," he said.

An autopsy on the woman will be scheduled later this week.

Fire investigators are still trying to determine a cause and origin of the blaze. Peterson said investigators planned to visit the home on Friday, but the frigid weather will make their jobs tougher.

"With the cold weather it's difficult to sift through the debris to try to find the cause with everything frozen," he said.
