Birch Run woman escapes uninjured after 500-pound tires crash into her kitchen

BIRCH RUN TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (11/08/2017) - Joann Duncan was in her kitchen Monday evening when a loud noise scared her half to death, she said.

A 500-pound set of dual tires and wheels from a semi trailer hauling sugar beets crashed into her house on Gera Road in Birch Run Township around 8:30 p.m., causing extensive damage to the kitchen wall.

"It sounded like an explosion," said Joann Duncan. "My cupboard doors flew open and everything flew out of the cupboard."

The tire and wheel assembly was red hot when it flew off the trailer, knocked down a neighbor's satellite TV dish and grazed a tree before slamming into the house. The impact caused an exterior wall to bow.

The assembly then bounced off the house and careened into a car parked nearby.

It narrowly missed the gas meter on the side of Duncan's house, but still caused a slight natural gas leak to develop. Consumers Energy crews were able to shut off the leak quickly.

Inside the kitchen, the sink got separated from the wall and shelves were moved. An insurance adjuster told the Duncans the wall entire of the house will have to be replaced.

Nobody was injured in the accident. The farmer who owns the truck has told the family he will take care of all expenses.

Investigators aren't sure why the tires and wheel assembly came off the semi-trailer.
