HARRISON (WJRT) (12/15/2017) - A Clare County man was sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison for coercing multiple young girls into sending him sexually explicit photos of themselves.

Derek Chapman, 22, met a 14-year-old girl on Kik, an online private messaging service in December 2015 and January 2016. She was suffering from depression and he convinced her to send him an image of her thigh after she cut herself.

Chapman then threatened to report the girl to Child Protective Services officials, who would take her away from her family, if she didn't send him more sexually explicit photos of herself.

Chapman admitted that he attempted to obtain sexually explicit photos from two other young girls on Kik, as well. Both of those girls also had engaged in self harm.

The case was investigated by the North East Michigan Trafficking and Exploitation Crimes Task Force, which includes Michigan State Police detectives assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, special agents from the FBI in Flint and Bay City agencies.
