FLINT (WJRT) - (08/12/17) - Democratic candidates who want to be our next governor spent Saturday evening in Flint.

The Meet the Candidate forum was held at the University of Michigan-Flint.

The event was put together by the Progressive Caucus of Mid-Michigan.

It chose Flint as a location for the first debate because it showcases one of the many challenges our state faces as we prepare to choose our next governor.

State Representative Phil Phelps, a Democrat from Flushing, moderated the forum.

Candidates who attended included: Dr. Abul El-Sayed, Shri Thanedar, Gretchen Whitmer and Bill Cobbs.

El-Sayed is the former director of Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion.

Whitmer previously was the Minority Leader of the state Senate.

Thanedar is an Indian-born entrepreneur and author.

Cobbs is the former vice president of Xerox.
