BIRCH RUN TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (05/19/17) - There's been a race track near Birch Run for nearly 70 years, and now there are plans to offer more outdoor activities there. Dixie Motor Speedway has a new name and a new owner.
The 49-acre site in Birch Run Township is now called the Birch Run Speedway and Event Center. It's hoped it will generate even more tourism in the Birch Run, Bridgeport and Frankenmuth area.
"For years since I've been in Birch Run, I've always admired this track and I always felt I could take it to another level if ever I was able to acquire it," said Andy Suski, the new owner.
There will continue to be stock car racing at the track.
"It will be our Number One thing we'll be doing, but also the township has been kind enough to approve a flea market, farmers market, crafts market, outdoor entertainment," Suski said.
The first stock car race of the season will be June 30. The roar of racing will be heard again on the half mile oval.
"The enthusiasm that I have received as soon as people realized I bought this has been unbelievable," Suski said.
The parking lot will be improved, as will the lighting there.
"We will be expanding the grandstands in the future. It will not be this season," Suski said.
The changes coming to the site should give a boost to tourism in the Birch Run, Bridgeport and Frankenmuth area.
"Obviously when you have more attractions, it's going to bring more audiences in. The larger crowds and more attractions you have, the consecutive days of attractions you have, the more likely people are going to want to come and stay overnight and that's something we're really excited about," said Ted Valley, of the Birch Run and Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce.
The first concert at the Birch Run Speedway and Event Center will be July 15.
