Durand man gets 15 to 50 years in prison for beating, burning 22-month-old

DURAND (WJRT) (9/15/2017) - Derek Mason will spend the next 15 to 50 years in prison after being sentencing for beating up and severely burning his girlfriend's 22-month-old daughter.

Police say the child, Natalie, was assaulted at a residence in Durand. Mason was accused of heating up water in the microwave and pouring it on the girl while she was taking a bath.

Natalie survived the incident.

Mason pleaded guilty to assault charges before he was sentenced. Abigail Springs, who is Natalie's mother, also pleaded guilty to assault charges and is awaiting sentencing in Shiawassee County next month.
