GAYLORD (WJRT) (02/09/2018) - A Flushing man died late Friday when police say he lost control of his snowmobile on a Northern Michigan trail.

Around 11:39 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police Gaylord Post responded to a trail that runs along South Old 27 Highway in Otsego County’s Bagley Township.

Police say 57-year-old Richard Velat was riding a Ski Doo snowmobile south on the trail when he lost control and struck several trees, throwing him off of the machine.

Valet was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the crash. They believe excessive speed was a factor.
