CLARE COUNTY (WJRT) (11/06/2017) - A grandfather recognized himself and his grandson in a surveillance photo from Jay's Sporting Goods over the weekend and plans to return stolen merchandise soon.
The Clare County Sheriff's Department had been looking for the grandfather and his grandson, who is younger than 18, since Friday when they allegedly left the store without paying for some merchandise. A list and value of the merchandise was being compiled over the weekend.
The grandfather reached out to the sheriff's department on Monday and indicated he had custody of the stolen merchandise. He lives out of the area, but plans to bring it back to Jay's Sporting Goods soon.
Detectives from the sheriff's department plan to interview the grandfather and grandson before sending reports to the Clare County Prosecutor's Office, which will decide whether any criminal charges will be filed.
Police did not identify either the grandson or grandfather.
