MT. MORRIS TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (9/4/2018) - Police closed the embattled Great Western Inn in Mt. Morris Township on Tuesday after receiving a court order.
The Mt. Morris Township Police Department posted copies of the order on the doors saying the hotel is closed for one year. People who prepaid to stay there can remain for as long as they've paid, but cannot extend their stay.
Police Chief Terence Green and Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton have been pushing to close the hotel near Pierson Road and I-75, claiming it presents a public nuisance due to rampant crime.
Authorities say the hotel frequently is the site of prostitution, drug trafficking and possibly human trafficking crimes. Police have responded to 106 complaints at the hotel from January to mid-August this year.
There was a homicide at the hotel in June, in which the body of a woman dead for days was located under a bed.
The judge's order closing the hotel allows the operators to renovate and improve the site, then consider petitioning the court for permission to reopen in a year. The owners could not immediately be reached for comment on whether they plan to make improvements or close for good.
