BAY CITY (WJRT) (10/12/2017) - The iconic Herman Hiss & Co. jewelry store on Washington Avenue is marking 150 years in business in Bay City this week.

The store opened in 1867, making it one of the city's oldest and longest operating businesses. The store survived the Great Depression, the expansion of shopping malls and online shopping to reach 150 years in business.
"We use to have china and silverware and all that kind of thing," said fourth-generation co-owner Barbara Bosco. "We don't do that anymore. Now we have hand bags and fun lines of costume jewelry that we didn't have."
The store has survived by adapting to new tastes and ever-changing market conditions.
"You have to evolve and stay fresh if you want to stay in business today and I've think we've done that pretty well and we are continuing to work on that as we go forward, always something new," Bosco said.
She co-owns the store with her brother, Thomas Tabor. Bosco's daughter and husband also work in the store, making it five generations.
