SANILAC COUNTY (WJRT) (11/19/17) - Two alleged intruders died and the third was on the loose Sunday after they broke into a Sanilac County house, where the homeowner encountered them with a gun.
The homeowner also received a gunshot wound to the leg, but was treated and released for a minor injury at a local hospital.
"It was a home invasion that went bad," said Sanilac County Sheriff Garry Biniecki.
The first 911 call came into Sanilac County Central Dispatch around 5 a.m. reporting shots fired at the residence in the 4300 block of Holbrook Road in Greenleaf Township.
Biniecki said four men broke into the home and were met by two armed residents inside. The people inside opened fire on the intruders, killing one on the spot.
"We do know that he was surprised and an exchange of gunfire" ensued, Biniecki said.
A second was found dead of gunshot wounds in a vehicle that crashed into the ditch near the intersection of Holbrook and Germania roads. That vehicle had been reported stolen from Flint in October.
"They left the residence and about a half mile later, the vehicle ran into a ditch," said Binieki.
Police K-9 tracking units were brought in to find the two remaining suspects. They were captured not too far from the scene.
Authorities were not sure what charges the two suspects would face.
