FLINT (WJRT) - (09/21/17) - One of the world's greatest jazz musicians performed for free at The Whiting Thursday evening.
Wynton Marsalis has won Grammies and a Pulitzer Prize for the music he says can "connect us to our earlier selves and better selves to come."
Now, he's bringing his music and passion to a new stage... classrooms in Flint and across the nation.
100 children from Flint Community schools were treated to a sound check and music lesson by Marsalis before his performance.
It's the beginning of a nationwide effort to give children the chance to listen to, feel and understand Jazz music.
Two years ago, Marsalis called Ridgeway White, the president of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation about an idea to work with afterschool programs launching the partnership.
Mott has granted more than $350,000 to Jazz at Lincoln Center to help after school programs everywhere use jazz music to teach history, cultural diversity and civic engagement.
