DETROIT (WJRT) - (1/16/2018) - Jeep designers say they were told to take the "weirdness" out of the Cherokee compact sport utility vehicle.
On Tuesday, at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, the automaker unveiled it's 2019 Jeep Cherokee.
The second generation vehicle has a more modern look. "We've evolved the front of the jeep, and we made significant changes to the rear," said Michael Manley, head of Jeep. "From my perspective, when I look at the vehicle it really does take the character of the Cherokee and elevate it to a more premium position."
The new design helps the Cherokee to fit right between its Grand Cherokee and Compass siblings.
It's lighter and comes in five different models.
The refresh comes at an important time for Jeep. The compact sport utility market has been hot, and the Cherokee saw sales slide in 2017.
"When I think about our portfolio we have a number of distinct vehicles," said Manley, "this one is important because it goes into the largest SUV segment of the world. Obviously as an SUV brand we need to have a very very strong contender in that market, and the new Cherokee is that."
