Man dies while trying to move a boat on Lake Fenton

FENTON (WJRT) (10/12/2017) - A man died Thursday afternoon after a bizarre accident while trying to move a boat on Lake Fenton.

The victim was working with another man to free a boat that was stuck on a lift around 12:45 p.m. The two men were jumping up and down on the boat to get it free when the victim lost his balance, said Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell.

The victim fell into the water and landed on the boat's propeller, which was spinning to help move the boat. The propeller severed the victim's leg in the water.

The Fenton Township Fire Department, which is located about a block away from the scene on Brown Street, arrived quickly and pulled the victim out of the water. He was bleeding heavily and in cardiac arrest when paramedics rushed him to an area hospital.

He was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital. Pickell said authorities notified the victim's family Thursday afternoon, but his name was not released.

Police took custody of the boat to determine whether any mechanical issues may have contributed to the accident. But Pickell said the man's death appears to be a freak, tragic accident.

"Someone leaves the house healthy and vibrant and after a short period of time there is a knock on the door nobody ever expects that and that's always a sad, sad time for a family," Pickell said.
