Meijer removing tobacco products from some stores, moving to gas stations

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) (2/1/2018) - If you want to buy tobacco products at some Meijer stores, you'll have to visit the neighboring gas stations instead.

The Grand Rapids-based retailer is removing tobacco products from some of its main stores and selling them exclusively at Meijer gas stations.

Meijer spokesman Frank Guglielmi confirmed the chain has been phasing in the change for about a year. The move is mostly prompted by a need to free up additional space in the checkout area, where tobacco products generally were on display.

Guglielmi said the change to tobacco sales is not a company-wide initiative and is only being carried out in randomly selected stores.

In the Flint area, the Hill Road Meijer does not carry tobacco in the main store but the Center Road Meijer does.

Guglielmi said the company is studying whether to carry out the change in all of its stores.
