Midwest League All Star Festivities at Dow Diamond

MIDLAND (WJRT) - (06/19/17) - It's a major league moment for Dow Diamond in Midland - two days of festivities are underway, surrounding the fifty-third annual Midwest League All-Star Game.

“As a whole, and the Loons are really excited to bring it back to Midland for the first time since 2008,” said Matt DeVries, assistant general manager for the Loons.

The Loons weren't scheduled to host again until 2024, but the opportunity to bring in crowds and show off recent developments downtown was worth the price to make it happen.

"We didn't want to wait the 16 years for our next turn in the lineup, and with the way the league is set up, you have the option to put in a bid and purchase another team's rights if they chose to put it up for sale, and we wanted to do that,” DeVries said.

The Loons’ goal is to keep fans around, following each day of festivities. The Chris Weaver Band performs a free concert on the outside lawn after Monday’s home run derby.

"They're nationally acclaimed artist out of Nashville. They won artist of the year by some publications in 2015. They put on a great show. They're a party type band,” DeVries said.

The party continues following the All-Star Game itself, with one of the largest fireworks shows the Loons have ever had.

"Sometimes you get three, four or five minutes after a Loons game. We're hoping to step it up a notch on Tuesday night,” DeVries said.

As of Monday morning, tickets were still available for the derby, with a limited number left for Tuesday's all star game.

"You can probably grab a spot on the lawn before they're all gone, but tomorrow is going to be a sellout. The Midwest League All Star Game, we're expecting a capacity crowd here at the ballpark, so we don't want fans to wait around until the day of the game or even until they get to the ballpark, because we may not have any tickets left,” DeVries said.

All Star festivities begins at 3 p.m., with a free tailgate party outside of Dow Diamond. That's followed by a Mid-Michigan-wide, high school all-star game at 4 p.m., with the home run derby beginning at 7 p.m.
