MICHIGAN (WJRT) - (9/27/2017) - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says monarch butterflies are disappearing at an alarming rate.
Officials say they can be saved by protecting and growing milkweed. It's a wild plant in both Michigan and Ohio. It's the only plant where monarch butterflies lay their eggs, and feed.
Experts say much of the milkweed in our state has been lost to development and herbicides.
The Department of Natural Resources is asking you not to mow over milkweed around your home.
The butterflies will need the plants when they migrate back to Michigan in the spring.
