GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) (1/11/2018) - An elderly woman was ripped off and lost nearly $100,000.
The person allegedly responsible?
Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell said it was her own flesh and blood. The suspect was supposed to be helping her aunt who is battling cancer, but he said she was helping herself instead -- to a lot of money.
Goodman, 44, had an agreement to help her 77-year-old aunt by taking her to doctor's appointments, making her food and cleaning her house.
Instead, Pickell said Goodman cleaned out her aunt's account. Goodman is accused of writing $96,000 worth of checks over two months to pay for things like concert tickets and iTunes.
A bank employee tipped off investigators at the Genesee County Sheriff's Office after noticing the string of unusual transactions.
Goodman is facing four felony counts of uttering and publishing. She could receive up to 14 years in prison if convicted.
"It's just tragic and sad because here's a woman's who not only has cancer, but part of the money she has to help fight the cancer is gone -- and it's gone because her niece took advantage of her -- someone she trusted and loved," Pickell said.
