PELSTON, Mich. (AP) - (07/31/18) - A northern Michigan lawmaker has apologized after Transportation Security Administration personnel recently discovered a loaded handgun in his carry-on bag as he was going through a pre-flight screening.
Republican state Rep. Lee Chatfield of Levering said Tuesday he had believed all of his pistols were registered through a Michigan State Police database. He says he registered that pistol soon afterward.
Emmet County Sheriff Pete Wallin tells the Petoskey News-Review that Chatfield was detained July 15 at Pellston Regional Airport and questioned at a sheriff's office substation. He said the handgun was confiscated and Chatfield was released.
Wallin says the case report has been turned over to the Emmet County Prosecuting Attorney's office for review and a determination if any criminal charges will be issued.
