FLINT (WJRT) (12/22/2017) - The Old Newsboys of Flint are coming to the finish line in their annual effort to make a happy holiday season for kids across Genesee County.
Since 1924, the Old Newsboys have helped more than 800,000 kids. On Friday, volunteers packed for the final round of present pickup at the organization's Mundy Township warehouse.
By Thursday morning, the Old Newsboys had packed 5,790 boxes of presents this year. It's a project of love and determination to put a smile on the faces of kids who might not otherwise have a Christmas.
Even Santa Claus stopped by to help pack gift boxes containing much needed items that will help thousands of children this Christmas. The boxes include a sweatshirt, sweatpants, two pairs of underwear, two pairs of socks, a stocking cap, 3M Thinsulate gloves, dental hygiene products and an age appropriate gift or toy.
Even though the annual effort is wrapping up this year, plans started much earlier to make this goal a reality.
"Actually, our fundraising goes on throughout the entire year," said Jeff Wade, the Old Newsboys executive treasurer. "The actual Christmas season for us kicks off in early November and we begin sign-up at that time and begin packing boxes."
The Old Newsboys' goal each year is to make sure every child finds a gift under their Christmas tree.
"I think it went very well," Wade said. "People have been very generous. Of course we can't wait until the Christmas season begins to start collecting donations for Old Newsboys. We just never get everything done in time."
Only $20 will sponsor a child for the Old Newsboys. Donations can be made throughout the year on the Old Newsboys website, which is posted under the Related Links on this story.
