MIDLAND (WJRT) (3/18/2018) - Parents are outraged over a reading assignment for Midland High School students.
"The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" is required reading for ninth graders at Midland Public Schools this year.
However, some parents are unhappy about the content and have begun circulating a petition to have it removed from the curriculum. The book makes references to alcohol, bullying and violence.
The school released the following statement about why the book was included in the class and how it can be removed:
"The process concluded that there were strong lessons included throughout the novel and confirmed the choice to have the novel in the curriculum. There is a multi-step process to remove the book. Currently the schools need to receive a request from the citizens to move forward."
