BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP (WJRT) (12/28/2017) - Parts of a busy Buena Vista Township intersection were closed Thursday evening after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle.
Police say a 74-year-old woman was crossing the intersection of Hess Avenue and Dixie Highway around 6:30 p.m. when the collision occurred.
According to investigators at the scene, she had just left the Dollar General and was hit by a Dodge Ram headed eastbound.
Saginaw County Central Dispatch reported parts of the busy intersection would remain closed for several hours.
A relative of the victim said the woman was just released from the hospital and was staying with family members who lived nearby.
Denise Lipsey, a family friend who lives just a few houses down from where the accident happened, said she saw the victim lying lifeless on the roadway shortly after the crash.
"I didn't hear any sirens, I just seen the lights and then my phone started ringing, everybody was asking me was I OK over here so I came out and she was laying there," Lipsey said.
She blamed the crash on a combination of poor lighting and impatient driving.
"All these flood lights in this parking lot and they never turned on. It's too dark," Lipsey said. "People can't see and then they drive crazy, like they're in a hurry -- a hurry for what?"
