Salvation Army distributes toys for Christmas Assistance Program

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) (12/21/2017) - The Salvation Army in Genesee County opened up its Toy Shop on Thursday, handing out gifts to families who have signed up for their Christmas Assistance Program.

A gym was filled with toys and clothing so parents could "shop" for their kids. The families also walked away with a box of food, enough to feed them for a week.

The goal is to brighten the holiday season for families in need.

The Toy Shop is funded by red kettle donations, as well as other donations that come in from the community.

"We have volunteers that have come in through schools and just through general volunteering questionnaires who have come in today," said Salvation Army Capt. Caleb Senn. "They will meet with our toy shop recipients. They will walk them through the entire process. So a parent is never alone."

The organization will continue accepting donations through the Christmas holidays.

Friday kicks off the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Match Day. One dollar becomes two with donations at all the Kroger locations in Genesee County.

Donations will double at Walmart locations on Saturday.
