Security in Ministry program provides guards for churches

Flint (WJRT) (11/6/17) When people attend church, they probably think they're in a very safe place. But shootings like that in Texas are happening more often.

Security in Ministry is a part of the Genesee County Sheriff's Department. There are about 38 churches like First Trinity that use the volunteers to reduce crime and make the congregation feel safer.

Security in Ministry has been around since 1988.

"We exist because we're here to protect the churches," said Col. Ralph Tedford of the Security in Ministry program.

Those who sign up for the program are given Sheriff Department uniforms and training in crime prevention.

"With all of the uniforms in that church and in the parking lot, that's a deterrent," said Robert Pickell, Genesee County Sheriff.
