SWARTZ CREEK (WJRT) (5/17/2018) - About 14 hours after a major fire broke out at Sharp Funeral Home in Swartz Creek, funeral directors and families planning services are starting to move on.
No injuries were reported and the 11 bodies stored inside the funeral home at 8138 Miller Road were not affected by the intense smoke and fire coming from the building late Wednesday into Thursday morning.
The bodies all were moved to other Sharp Funeral Home locations overnight. Funeral directors are asking families of loved ones at the Swartz Creek funeral home to call 810-239-8800.
About 10 fire departments worked through the night to knock down flames shooting as high as 50 feet in the air at the height of the blaze.
Roger Sharp, the man who has owned this business since 1969, was emotional late Wednesday as he watched firefighters work to contain the fire. He said the fire primarily affected the preparation and storage area of the building.
Swartz Creek Fire Chief Dave Plumb said one of the most important objectives for fire crews was securing the bodies of people's loved ones.
"It was a major concern," he said. "We wanted to make sure the families were able to take care of their people appropriately. So as soon as we were able to, as soon as the fire was knocked down, out of the cooler area we were able to get them in a trailer and get them taken care of."
As the smoke cleared on Thursday, investigators began poring over the rubble to determine what sparked the fire. There was no word Thursday morning on a possible cause or origin.
