Shiawassee County mother sent to prison after beating, abusing 22-month-old child

CORUNNA (WJRT) (11/03/2017) - A Shiawassee County mother will be in prison for up to 50 years after she assaulted and abused her 22-month-old daughter.

Abigail Springs was sentenced to 15 to 50 years in prison on Friday in a Shiawassee County courtroom. Her boyfriend, Derrick Mason, received the same sentence earlier this fall.

Springs pleaded guilty in August to first-degree child abuse after she and Mason beat up 22-month-old Natalie and put her in a bathtub with scalding water. Natalie suffered several broken bones, internal injuries and severe burns.

The girl spent several weeks in Mott Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. She since has recovered.

A first-degree child abuse charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, but part of Springs' plea agreement with prosecutors included a deal for a lesser sentence.
