CORUNNA (WJRT) (11/15/2017) - The suspect in a Shiawassee County assault case bolted out of the courthouse in Corunna after a judge increased his bond Wednesday morning.
Derec Edwards Shears had been free on bond while facing a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. A judge in 66th District Court increased Shears' bond to $25,000, at which point Shears fled.
Shiawassee County Sheriff Brian BeGole said Shears was not under arrest or in police custody when he fled.
Police didn't alert area residents or businesses of the situation because officers didn't sense an imminent threat to public safety. However, Corunna Public Schools were placed in "secure mode" as a precaution.
"The safety and security of Shiawassee County residents is of the (utmost) importance to me and my office," BeGole said. "Had this incident become a threat to our community, notifications would have been made to residents and businesses directing them to take precautions."
Shears remained at large on Wednesday evening. Anyone who knows where he is or notices anything suspicious is asked to call 911 immediately.
