Sponge heads home for the holiday weekend

ROYAL OAK (WJRT) - (11/25/2016) - "I think it makes those shows really special," Vinnie Dombroski says as Sponge gets ready to play it's first Detroit area show in quite awhile after a busy summer and fall of touring the country. "It's a conscious effort at times not to be at home doin' those gigs."
This weekend Sponge plans to make up for the long delay between hometown shows with a post-Thanksgiving performance at Royal Oak Music Theater. And to make the event that much more special, they're going to be playing their 1996 album Wax Ecstatic in it's entirety.
"It's somethin' we've never done, it's been over 20 years since the record has been released, so we're going to play everything."
Vinnie says the band hasn't played a lot of the songs in the past two decades, so rehearsing them for Saturday's show has been quite an experience.
"Kinda weird, you forget what the songs were, you forget how to approach them, you feel different having to perform them or sing them."
Sponge will be recording and filming the gig, and plans to have a crowd funding campaign similar to what they've done for the Rotting Alive and The Beer Sessions projects. And Vinnie says this new way of making records has been a lot of fun.
"I think even beyond the benefits of being able to finance a record, I gotta add modestly finance a record, we've benefitted in ways I've never expected. Which is meeting new friends, new people. It really has been an eye opener regarding that aspect of it."
