NEW YORK (AP) - (10/12/2017) - He's a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, performed before millions of people and earned untold riches. Now 68, Bruce Springsteen has set out to create a wholly new performance template.
"Springsteen on Broadway," which opened Thursday night, is a deeply personal life story with a soundtrack. It's a touching and funny one-man show, with the exception of two songs when his wife Patti joins him. The show runs five nights a week through Feb. 3.
This is a set piece, not a concert. The 15 songs in a 130-minute performance are secondary to Springsteen's stories about growing up in Freehold, New Jersey, and pokes fun at his own persona.
He wryly notes his lyrics of escape and says, "I live 10 minutes from my hometown."
