Strong winds Tuesday night bring possiblity of power outages

GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (01/10/17) - The promise of strong wind gusts is bringing the possibility of power outages across Mid-Michigan.

With a wind advisory in effect, Consumers Energy is preparing for outages.

Tuesday afternoon, supervisors with the company from across the state joined a conference call with their staff meteorologist who gave them the run down, which could be up to 60 mph gusts.

It's not just the wind they're worried about to take out power lines, it's the ice build up too. We're told when ice starts to accumulate on trees, it can cause limbs to snap and down lines.

Consumers spokesperson Kevin Keane says if you lose power and plan to use a gas power generator, keep this in mind.

"Do not run a generator in your garage or inside your home, never refuel a running generator and make sure you're not trying to power too many appliances on a portable generator," Keane said.

Make sure your cell phone is charged just in case the power goes out Tuesday, that way you can check the Consumers Energy website on your smart phone to monitor their progress.
