The bike lady Angela Stamps turning Flint into a biking city

FLINT, Michigan (WJRT) - (05/18/17) - She a force to be reckoned with, on two wheels that is.

ABC12's Amy Hybels met up with Angela Stamps at Bluebell Beach to learn more about one woman's quest to turn Flint into a biking city.

She's known as "the "Bike Lady" and she's on a mission.

"We really want to dominate the world with bicycle riding, " noted Flint resident Angela Stamps Thursday evening at a free bike clinic being held at Bluebell Beach.

Stamps fell in love with biking by accident when her car was repossessed while she was living in California.

Now she rides year round and is helping others to learn about the joys of bike riding.

"If I can get them to come out of the house and get on a bike with me--I think that is so cool that they get out and follow along with me and listen to the craziness," she noted.

Stamps founded the Berston Bicycle Club for kids in 2012 and this is just her second season running the iBikeParks program through Genesee County Parks--offering free bike clinics to all ages.

The best part of the program is there's no cost as both the helmets and the bikes are donated.

"So if you want to do it, you can do it," said Stamps, "the excuse 'I don't have a bike, I don't have a helmet' well you don't even have that excuse anymore."

While the underlying goal is fitness, Stamps wants Flint residents to learn to enjoy the outdoors.

After the helmet, her biggest safety tips?

"Just inform people that we're not supposed to ride against the flow of traffic in fact it's against the law," Stamps said. "Get rid of your cell phone, get those earbuds out of your ears and pay attention to your surroundings."

Her tips for motorists?

"All we ant you to do is share the road and just be aware of us--that's all," said Stamps.

So if you see Stamps and her fellow bikers out for a ride this spring--make sure you give them plenty of room--or better yet --join them for a ride.

"Get out of the house," she advises, "socialize, check out the parks, feel the wind on your face."
