What to know before leaving your home for Labor Day weekend

(WJRT) - (8-30-17) - More than 30 percent of all Americans are going to travel over the Labor Day weekend.

The trouble is, thieves expect you to be gone and are planning to take advantage of that.

Ooma home security says to keep these things in mind before you leave: 34% of break-ins happen through the front door. Make sure it is secure and locked.

First floor windows are the way thieves get into homes almost a quarter of the time. Check to make sure they are locked and bushes are providing cover.

Window AC units can be easily removed to let thieves in.

Locks on sliding doors are easy to pick. You should put some sort of bar in the track to prevent the door from sliding open.

Leaving lights on does work as a deterrent. It's best if they are on a timer.
