Time and money are always a consideration when it comes to restoring a vehicle.
Today, Karen Gatlin follows up with a young woman from Davison who would like to finish her restoration project by the time Back to the Bricks rolls around in August.
Helena Kramer was 13 when she bought this 1968 Chevy Truck.
She's now 21. "Hopefully, it's ready, and will be able to roll earlier on in the summer. Hopefully."
Those comments were made in March. Since then she's graduated with an associates degree in business from Mott Community College, is prepared to start on her bachelor's degree in Marketing at Northwood and started a full-time job in the body shop at the Jim Waldron dealership in Davison.
"I have my fingers crossed that it will still be able to be on the road this summer. It's gonna take a lot of juggling to get it done."
Waldron learned of Helena when the dealership signed on as a sponsor of the Davison Car Cruise, which Helena organizes. She's also on the Back to the Bricks committee.
This full-time student, employee and community do-gooder doesn't have a lot of spare time. We first joined Helena in her garage in February as she was wet sanding the truck and her dad was fixing brakes.
A month later, she was ready to paint the inside of the cab. "First I have to clean it with wax and grease remover and make sure there's nothing on it. Tack cloth it off, get all the dust particles that are left there. And then it will be ready to paint."
A number of smaller parts already sport her favorite purple paint. "I painted 71 parts on Sunday - all this size and smaller. The inside of the cab is finally all purple. I'm excited about that," she said.
"Then in the process of getting the rest of the body panels welded up, ready to go and in primer so I can paint everything all at once because it's a metallic, and if you don't paint metallics all at once, then you might have variation in your color and it'll look funny."
The Davison Car Cruise starts the first week in June and continues through September.
If she's able to juggle fast enough, you might see Helena's purple '68 Chevy Truck cruisin' through Davison or at Back to the Bricks in Flint this August.
