(8/2/2011)Earlier this week, we told you Gratiot County may see its first wind turbines go up next week.
Well today, the first wind turbine is up in what will be the thumb areas third wind park.
Its located in Sanilac County, near Minden City, southeast of the Ubly wind turbines.
These turbines are larger than the ones in Ubly and near Pigeon.
"They are huge..they re big," says Wayne Susalla of Parisville.
"Huge..you stand there..its amazing..the crane itself," adds Carl Peruski.
The first wind turbine of the thumb area's third wind park is now up.
"Oh my gosh..what a ..you never experience something like this in your life," Susalla says.
The park is being built by Exelon Generation Corporation, based out of Chicago, which now owns the Ubly and Pigeon area wind parks.
This park in northeast Sanilac County will have 50 wind turbines and will be the largest of the three. A second wind turbine is now going up.
"Hopefully this one that they are working on today..they will get it up today or tomorrow, Peruski said.
When Peruski graduated from Ubly High School in the 1975, he never imagined wind turbines would be standing on his property.
"Never heard of them."
His land will eventually be the home to three of the structures.
"Its the thing of the future. Everybody has them," Peruski says.
Several other wind parks are being planned in the thumb area, so sights like this will be common, a train carrying dozens of wind turbine parts across the state.
"So many years we live without these things, and now they are coming about, we need alternative energy and that's what we need, Susalla said.
This new wind energy park is expected to be completed and producing electricity by the end of the year.
