Genesee County Jail inmates help with Crim preps

(08/25/11) The Crim Festival of Races couldn't run without a lot of help from volunteers.  And some of those volunteers require an extra level of supervision.

19 inmates from the Genesee County Jail took on a number of tasks in downtown Flint Thursday morning.

"They all are non-violent. They're in jail for back child support, misdemeanor-type offenses," explained Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell.

This is not the first time an inmate work detail has been assigned to the Crim.

"They've helped for several years now. They come in, they help set up fencing. They help move tables and chairs; pick up trash and garbage," said Ric Hogerheide of the Crim Festival of Races.

Pickell added, "The Crim Race --part of it being a big success-- is we'll have put a lot of work into this race before the race even starts."

A week ago, the sheriff's office bought a bus for transporting prisoners.

"We purchased it from the Davison School District. They were going to mothball it. We purchased it for $500." Pickell said.

Apparently some of the inmates don't mind getting out of jail, getting some fresh air and being a part of the work detail. They come willing to work.

"Their attitudes are great. I've been really surprised through the years of them coming here. It's really been nice," said Hogerheide.

"It helps with jail overcrowding and it give these guys something to do," added Pickell

The public may see jail work details more often.

"We're going to be cleaning up the Interstates. We're going to go out to all the different parks. If there's a non-profit and they need the inmates to come and clean up, they should give me a call at the sheriff's office and we'll work something out where we can come out and help you too," Pickell said.
