Mother pleads guilty in Dominick Calhoun case

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) -

(08/30/11) - Dominick Calhoun's mother, Corrine Baker, has pleaded guilty to two charges tied to his April 2010 murder.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Baker pleaded guilty to second degree murder and second degree child abuse.  It's what she was originally charged with shortly after the boy's death.  He was four.

As part of the agreement, Baker is expected to spend 13-30 years in prison.

Baker was charged because, according to investigators, she did not do enough to save her badly injured son during days of abuse.

Her then boyfriend, Brandon Hayes, is awaiting trial. He faces murder, torture, child abuse and drug charges tied to the Dominick's death.

Investigators believe Hayes started the abuse because the boy wet himself on the couch inside the couple's Argentine Township apartment.

It's a case that stirred much emotion and outrage in the community.

At Hayes' preliminary hearing, back in June of 2010, we heard testimony from the doctor who performed Dominick's autopsy.  That doctor said he stopped counting injuries when he got to 100.

We also heard heart wrenching testimony from Dominick's older brother. The boy witnessed what happened during the last days of his life.

He says he was also abused adding Hayes "smacked around," "pressed" or "punched" their genitals.

The boy testified Dominick's head was smashed into the wall and his little hand burned by the hottest water they had in the bathroom.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says Dominick's family is in agreement with this plea and Baker could testify at Hayes' trial.

"She did too little too late, but she was there. She did try to protect her child at the very end, but again too little too late which is why she's facing and now convicted of second degree murder," Leyton said.

Baker will be sentenced in October.
