New construction at Michigan School for the deaf

FLINT (WJRT) -

(09/19/11) - For over 100 years, the Michigan School for the Deaf has been located on Miller Road in Flint.

Monday, a multi-million dollar project got underway on what will be their new grounds.

Lurvey White Ventures, a private company, bought the MSD campus last year from the state and has big plans. A very visual part of that project got underway Monday.

It's a $36 million redevelopment on the grounds of the Michigan School for the Deaf.

On Monday, crews started knocking down a vacant building that used to contain the school's gymnasium.

Crews also excavated the land around the former gym.

Last year the state sold the Flint campus to developer Lurvey White Ventures who is renovating it and turning it into the new home of the School for the Deaf and potentially Powers Catholic High School.

Back in December of last year, state legislation was approved and allowed a Genesee County developer to buy Flint's Michigan School for the Deaf property for $1.3 million.

The developer has told ABC12 in the past this project will create as many as 150 jobs.
