(10/25/11) - A Midland woman who volunteers for the American Cancer Society has won a once in a lifetime chance to appear in a Kid Rock and Martina McBride video. A Saginaw radio station helped make the connection.
Mix 106.3 (WGER-FM) was one of four radio stations in the state contacted by Kid Rock's organization to find someone to participate in an upcoming video shoot for the song "Care."
"Some of the lyrics are: I can't change the world. I can't feed the hungry. I can't clothe the homeless. The least I can do is care,'" said Kelly McMann, who works at Mix 106.3.
The radio station asked the Midland County Humane Society, The American Cancer Society, the Child Abuse and Neglect Council of Saginaw County and the American Heart Association if they were interested.
"The whole song is about caring and causes," McMann said.
Tuesday morning, all the agencies met at a Carrollton Township church to see whose name would be drawn. Shannon Luft of Midland was the lucky winner. Luft was asked what will be the first thing she'll say to Kid Rock.
"I don't know. This happened so quickly. I'm shocked. I don't know. I'm really excited though," Luft said.
"This whole video is going to have people holding signs of what they care about," McMann said.
"My father is a melanoma survivor. We lost my husband's grandfather in 2007 to colon cancer," Luft said.
"She's going to represent Saginaw, Mid-Michigan and the Tri-Cities," McMann said.
"I'm actually a big fan of the song. The lyrics are so powerful," Luft said.
The video with Kid Rock will be shot Thursday. As for where the location, that's not being disclosed. It's big secret.
"We're very mum on it, but it is going to be shot in the state of Michigan," McMann said.
Luft says she's a little reluctant to call her boss.
"Now I'm going to have to call in sick Thursday," she said. At least her boss will know she "cares."
