Date set for first Abuelazam trial

Posted: Updated:

(10/28/11) - A trial date has been set for suspected serial stabber Elias Abuelazam.

Jury selection will begin Feb. 7, 2012 in the Arnold Minor murder case. Minor was found stabbed and nearly dead the morning of Aug. 2, 2010.

Abuelazam, suspected in a series of stabbings spanning three states in the spring and summer months of 2010, faces charges in nine stabbing cases. He is charged with three murders and six cases of assault with intent to murder.

The trial date set for the Minor case came after a motion hearing Friday afternoon.

Circuit Court Judge Judith Fullerton ruled prosecutors can present evidence and testimony from the other cases he's charged in, at this trial, adding the circumstances are "amazingly similar."

At the district court level, prosecutors presented DNA evidence showing victim's blood on Abuelazam's shoe, jeans and also in his SUV.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton says they have proof beyond a reasonable doubt to show Abuelazam committed these crimes.

Abuelazam's attorneys say questionnaires will be used to help with jury selection, to try and streamline it by asking people what they know and how they feel about the case.

There was a lot of media attention in the week leading up to his Atlanta arrest in August of 2010 and then in the time since.

Pre-trial publicity and "racial issues" are a concern, according to Abuelazam's attorneys.

His attorneys say the insanity defense is still on the table.
