FLINT (WJRT) -

(11/16/11) - Students at Freeman Elementary in Flint will get a chance to grow healthy food year round thanks to the Crim Fitness Foundation.

Wednesday, a grand opening was held for the school's new Hoop House.

The students took a tour and learned about different types of vegetables and what is needed to grow them.

Those involved say it is going to be a hands on learning experience.

"I think that a lot of it they'll just have fun getting dirty and planting the seeds and doing the things with their hands and then supplementing that. I'll be teaching some lessons on gardening skills, and why it's important to be learning about this kind of stuff in terms of the environment, our own personal health and our community health," said Robyn Wardell of FoodCorps.

The first plants will go in the ground in January, and harvesting will take place before school ends in June.
