GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -

(11/21/11) -  Thanksgiving is just a couple of days away and to help families in Genesee County prepare for the holiday, several organizations teamed up to give out food. Organizers estimate more than 500 people lined up for help.

"It's overwhelming to see the line up all the way around the sidewalks the streets, taking up almost the entire block," said Vicky Schultz CEO of Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties.

A team of radio stations, Z92.7, CK105.5, Sports Xtra 1330, B95, Super Talk 1570, the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and Catholic Charities, joined together to giveaway more than 1,800 pounds of food.

With the holiday season just starting, volunteers say much more needs to be done to help struggling families.

"The city of Flint needs our help. I was born and raised here, these people are our family, we are not just going to stop now, we've got to keep helping," said August Wallace of Z92.7.

Schultz encourages community members who are fortunate to find a way to help others this holiday.

"Set out a box and do a food drive because this is evidence that we need food," she said.

Catholic Charities will serve Thanksgiving dinner to those in need at the North End Soup Kitchen.

The organization also plans to hold another food giveaway on Thanksgiving Day.
